Every case in this block is a patient with more than one condition. Heart failure and chronic kidney disease — restrict sodium, restrict potassium and protein. Diabetes and gout. Liver disease with cardiac failure. Learners must produce a single set of instructions a patient can actually follow, which usually means deciding which condition takes priority and saying so.

What learners find hardest

Not the science. The realisation that the dietary advice their patients receive typically comes from two or three clinics that have never communicated, and that the patient resolves the contradiction by ignoring all of it. Reconciling it is nobody’s designated job, which is why the module exists.
